Today I’ve been working with a group around the topic of compassionate leadership and communication and came across a great YouTube clip featuring Louise Evans. In the video Louise introduces her idea of five coloured chairs, which can be used to represent our different mental and emotional states, and how communication can then flow from those different ‘internal states’. They move from RED (ATTACK) to YELLOW (SELF-DOUBT) to GREEN (WAIT) through to BLUE (DETECT) and finally PURPLE (CONNECT).
These might correspond to these questions in our own minds:
RED: What is wrong with them?
YELLOW: What is wrong with me?
GREEN: WAIT acronyms for – What Am I Thinking ? What Am I Telling myself?
BLUE: What do I need here?
PURPLE: What do you need?
As we move through the colours we are becoming more conscious and aware.
