I’m teaching my youngest to drive at the moment and I had forgotten just how complex this thing called driving is. Also, someone close to me has had to temporarily cease driving due to health reasons. Driving is something I do daily, I love driving and I think I’ve taken it for granted.

It got me thinking, what else do I take for granted? What strengths do I have that I give no thought to, yet they form the core of what I do and who I am?

I was coaching someone recently and they were thinking about, what next? I asked them two simple questions, “what are you good at?” and “what do you love doing?” We were both surprised at how difficult it was to answer these questions. So, is it ok to take things for granted, it makes life simpler but are we missing out on something?

My mind then moved to WHO do I take for granted and for me this bought some sadness. There are people and relationships in my life that I am thankful and grateful for and yes, I take them for granted.

What’s the opposite of ‘take for granted’? Words like value, appreciate, recognise and nurture comes up for me. I’m wondering what the impact of the words “take for granted” is on you?

So, I’m going to start by thanking my youngest for this stream of thought. I wondered what he’ll make of that!!
